Job Summary
The Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Colorado Boulder seeks applicants for the position of Assistant Teaching Professor to begin Fall 2026. Teaching professors compose the core of the department's full-time teaching faculty team, and play a fundamental role in the department's educational mission. The initial appointment is for a term of three years, with contract renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance. The successful applicant will be prepared to teach a wide range of applied mathematics and statistics courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, including large lower-division classes (between 90-150 students for Calculus 1, Calculus 2, Calculus 3, and Differential Equations/Linear Algebra). Preference will be given to applicants with expertise in statistics and data science, including experience with curriculum development in those areas. The ideal candidate will collaborate with others to support the department's BA and new BS in Statistics and Data Science. Additional responsibilities may include coordinating multi-section courses, supervising teaching assistants, serving on departmental committees, supporting growth in the department's statistics and data science degree offerings, and advising undergraduate and professional master's students. Who We Are
The Department of Applied Mathematics has its origins in the turn of the 20th century, and evolved out of the Department of Engineering Mathematics. The department teaches thousands of students and has a major research presence in computational and physical/biological mathematics and the statistical sciences. The faculty is composed of 20 tenured or tenure track faculty and 12 full time instructors. In addition, the department is home to more than 140 graduate students including approximately 60 PhD students, about 160 applied math majors, 230 statistics and data science majors, a large number of minors and a thriving BS-MS program.
The department strives to be a leading program of applied mathematics. Our faculty have won numerous awards including: four fellows of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, two fellows of the American Mathematical Society, two American Statistical Association Fellows, two Sloan Fellows, two National Science Foundation CAREER awards, a Mathematical Association of America Distinguishing Teaching Award, a National Society of Professional Engineers-Colorado Educator of the Year Award, a CU-Boulder Hazel Barnes Prize, a University of Colorado Distinguished Professor, and winners of numerous CU-Boulder faculty awards.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- The teaching requirement for this appointment is 5 semester courses per academic year. As part of the service commitment, the individual may be asked to: coordinate multi-section courses; develop curricula and pedagogical techniques; assist in the administration of the department's professional master's degree; and/or advise undergraduate or professional master's students.
What We Can Offer
- The salary range for this position is $80,000-$86,000 annually. One time payment of up to $10,000 moving allowance to qualified candidates. One time payment of an additional $5,000 for onboarding allowance.
- This 75%, 9-month position is common for Department of Applied Mathematics teaching faculty who teach 5 courses per academic year.
