Position Summary:
This position is grant funded and ongoing employment is contingent on future grant funding.

For over 25 years ago Success at Southern/TRIO SSS program has been committed to increase the college retention, academic standing and graduation rates of eligible participants. By providing a variety of services to meet students' needs, we assist eligible participants in clarifying their goals, succeeding academically in their chosen program of study, and graduating with a bachelor's degree in a timely manner. During these years, Success at Southern/TRIO SSS program has served more than 1,500 students most of them first generation and low income students.

This position serves as an academic Math Tutor for Success at Southern (SAS)/TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Program providing one-on-one and small group, scheduled and drop-in tutoring sessions to all SAS/TRIO SSS participants. The Professional Tutor prepares and offers mini-workshops related to the area of tutoring experience to SAS/TRIO SSS participants.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • One (1) year tutoring experience or demonstrated expertise in the subject area, including but not limited to basic, pre-algebra, algebra, statists, and physics courses.

    Preferred Qualification:
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Must have excellent reading and writing skills, patience, and an ability to coach students in writing college-level papers for a range of courses.
  • Knowledge of learning strategies, study skills, and effective academic achievements strategies.
  • Knowledge of Computer and office applications, particularly Microsoft Office, Google Docs and Drive, and other content platforms.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Experience working with students with learning differences.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of students.
  • Strong public orientation and ability to work in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with a high level of productivity and accuracy/attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to adapt to and work effectively in a heavily bureaucratic environment which requires regular interaction with a number of levels within the organization.
  • Working knowledge, or ability to quickly learn, university infrastructure, policies and procedures.

    Special Conditions
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA):
